The Dune movie was released recently. Then Dune fans started looking for Dune video games again. Unfortunately, there are a very limited number of Dune games, many of which are outdated.
Game studio Funcom is licensed to produce three new games set in the Dune universe. China’s giant technology company Tencent invested in this studio last year. With this huge investment, fans were hopeful that new Dune games could be released.
Dune Video Games
Various video games have been released after Frank Herbert’s novel and David Lynch’s movie. Some of these games are good games.
Dune (1992)
In the first game on our list, Paul Atreides is the main protagonist of the game. You try to control the spice on the hot sands of the planet Arrakis. Inspired by David Lynch’s movie, the game has a very simple background. But considering when it came out, there are excellent sounds and images that create the impression of 3D animation.
Dune 2 (1992)
Real-time strategy games would be quite different today if the game developer Westwood had chosen to adopt the novel differently. In 1992 they only had a few pixels. Despite this, they managed to successfully adapt the huge science fiction work into the game.
In Dune 2, the ripple of sandy pixels indicates the presence of a fearsome sandworm. Small red boxes indicate Harkonnen battle tanks.
Dune 2000 (1998)
Westwood game studio redeveloped the original game in 1998. However, this time it was not as successful as the first game. Although it wasn’t a bad game, it had to compete with games like Total Annihilation.
In Dune 2000, there are live-action cutscenes. In fact, Rhys-Davies, the actor who played the role of Gimli in The Lord of the Rings, also appears in these scenes.
Frank Herbert’s Dune (2001)
When Frank Herbert’s Dune appeared in 2001, there were games such as GTA 3 and Max Payne on the market. Compared to these games, it was a very bad shooter game in terms of 3D graphics. The gameplay and story were also awful.
Civilization IV Dune Wars Mod
We wanted to add the Dune Wars mod to the list, even though it is not a game on its own based on the Dune universe. Because there aren’t many games around. With this mod, you fight to control the desert and spice in Civilization IV.
